A COMPACT SOLUTION TO A GROWING OPPORTUNITY

The Aeva is a mini indoor hydroponic farm that doubles as a super stylish piece of furniture for your home or apartment. The all-in-one system is capable of growing kale, spinach, herbs, tomatoes, strawberries – and just about anything else that you feel like growing 365 days a year.

Co-founders Conner Tidd and Kevin Jakiela

Co-founders Conner Tidd and Kevin Jakiela first met over a lunch meeting at the University of Toronto. At the time, Conner was working for a crop science company and Kevin had just come back from pioneering indoor growing research in the Canadian Arctic. Their reasons for creating the Aeva came from their first hand experience witnessing the profound harm our current food system is causing our planet. This includes fertilizer runoffs creating ocean “dead zones”, top soil degradation; excessive water usage and all the unchecked miles that are used when transporting food.

We first connected with Conner and Kevin at The Impact Centre, a University of Toronto Science Start-up Accelerator where Inertia was giving a talk to their hardware startups about product manufacturing planning. A few things really stood out when we first met. First, was how passionate Conner and Kevin were about fixing our broken food system. Second was the depth of their knowledge, both technically and on the business side of things. And third was their bold ambition and vision for where they want to take their company.

DESIGN DIRECTION: THINK FURNITURE, NOT EQUIPMENT

Both Conner and Kevin recognized early on that the commercial viability of the Aeva depended on more than just how well it worked. They were looking to create an indoor hydroponic system that was just as beautiful to look at, as it was functional.

Given that the Aeva was being positioned as a consumer product, we wanted people to relate to it as a piece of furniture rather than a piece of equipment. If you’ve seen a lot of the other home hydroponic units, you’ll know what Im talking about when I refer to many of the existing units as “equipment”.

Randy Yang, our lead industrial designer on the project, shares his approach to the design:

“One of the key customer targets for the Aeva was couples and families living in smaller spaces in high density urban areas. So for starters, we went for a clean modern approach. Incorporating wood into the design was a deliberate decision. Wood conveys a sense of warmth and has the ability to integrate well with other furniture in the space.”

WHAT'S NEXT?

The initial reaction to the prototype has been incredibly strong. Our approach to design has helped the Aeva standout from the competition in trade shows and marketing events and has created a lot of additional interest from style conscious end users and investors.

We’re really excited to be Just Verticals product development partner as we continue on our journey to commercialization.
